What to expect visiting Madrid in June, July, and August — serious heat, Veranos de la Villa events, and how to actually cope with it.

The Heat Is Real
Madrid summers run genuinely hot — daytime highs regularly pushing past 35°C (95°F) in July and August, with August being the hottest and quietest month as many locals leave the city entirely. This isn't a mild European summer; plan around it rather than fighting it.
How Madrid Copes
The city's rhythm shifts: mornings for sightseeing before the heat peaks, an indoor midday break, and life moving back outdoors from early evening onward. Rooftop bars and terraces do their best business of the year, and dinner reservations routinely run past 22:00 when it's finally cooled down enough to eat comfortably outside.
Veranos de la Villa
Madrid's summer cultural festival runs June through August, filling the city with free and ticketed concerts, theatre, and outdoor cinema across parks and historic venues — check the programme against your dates, since it changes the city's evening options considerably.
Chueca Pride
Madrid's Orgullo (Pride) celebrations in late June or early July are among the largest in Europe, centred on Chueca with a parade that shuts down the surrounding streets. Book accommodation well ahead if your visit overlaps.
Practical Notes
Air conditioning is standard in hotels and most restaurants, less reliable in older budget accommodation — check before booking if summer heat is a concern. Hydrate more than feels necessary and avoid scheduling major outdoor sightseeing (Retiro Park, walking tours) for the 13:00–17:00 window. August is the quietest month for crowds at major sights, since much of Madrid itself is on holiday — a genuine upside if you can handle the heat.
