The Best Season to Visit
March opens cool but sunny, warming steadily through April and into a genuinely ideal May — mild days, cool evenings, and none of summer's punishing heat. This is widely considered the best window of the year to visit Madrid, and the crowds reflect it.
San Isidro
Madrid's biggest annual festival, honouring the city's patron saint, runs mid-May with a week of free concerts, traditional chulapo and chulapa dress in the streets, and the Pradera de San Isidro filling with picnics along the Manzanares. Book accommodation well ahead if your trip lands during the festival.
Blooming Streets
Late April into May brings the jacaranda trees along Paseo del Prado and elsewhere into purple bloom, alongside the roses in Retiro's dedicated Rosaleda garden — both genuinely worth timing a photo walk around if the season lines up.
Weather Notes
Rain is more likely in March and early April than later in the season — pack a light layer for cooler mornings even as afternoons warm up. By May, outdoor terrace dining and rooftop bars are back in full swing across the city.
Booking Notes
Spring is peak season for a reason — the Prado, Royal Palace, and Reina Sofía all benefit from advance booking, especially through April and May weekends. Restaurants on outdoor terraces fill fast on the first genuinely warm weekends of the year.
