One Day in Madrid: The Perfect Itinerary
A realistic one-day Madrid itinerary — Royal Palace in the morning, the Golden Triangle of Art at midday, tapas in La Latina by night.

Morning: The Old Town
Start at Puerta del Sol by 09:00, before the square fills — find Kilometre Zero underfoot and the bear-and-strawberry-tree statue. Walk ten minutes to the Royal Palace, aiming to be through security by 10:00; budget ninety minutes for the state rooms. Exit through Plaza de Oriente, then cut across to Plaza Mayor for a coffee under the arcades before the tour groups arrive in force.
Midday: One Museum, Done Properly
Walk or take the Metro to Paseo del Prado for the Museo del Prado. Rather than attempting the whole collection, pick two wings — Velázquez and Goya cover the highlights in under two hours. If Guernica matters more to you than old masters, swap in the Reina Sofía instead; doing both properly in one day is possible but rushed.
Lunch: Cocido or Tapas
For a sit-down classic, Taberna La Bola near Plaza de España serves cocido madrileño cooked for hours in earthenware pots — reserve ahead. For something faster, head to La Casa del Abuelo for gambas al ajillo standing at the bar, Madrid tapas culture in ten minutes flat.
Afternoon: Retiro Park
Walk to Retiro Park and rent a rowboat on the Estanque Grande, or simply walk the tree-lined paths past the Palacio de Cristal. It's the calmest hour of the day to build in, and a genuine break from the pace of the morning.
Evening: La Latina Tapas Crawl
Head to Cava Baja in La Latina as the sun starts to set. Work along the street in short stops — one or two dishes per bar — finishing at Casa Lucio for huevos rotos if you booked ahead, or Casa Amadeo (Los Caracoles) on Plaza de Cascorro if you didn't.
