Madrid's best nightlife neighbourhoods — Malasaña for indie bars, Chueca for LGBTQ+ nightlife, Huertas for jazz, and where the superclubs are.

Madrid Doesn't Sleep, Literally
Madrid's nightlife runs later than almost anywhere else in Europe — dinner at 22:00, bars filling up after midnight, and clubs that don't peak until 02:00 or later. Pace accordingly: a proper Madrid night usually starts with tapas, moves to bars around 23:00, and only reaches clubs well after 01:00.
Malasaña: Indie & Alternative
The heart of Madrid's countercultural nightlife since La Movida in the 1980s — dive bars, natural wine spots, and a genuinely mixed-age crowd. La Vía Láctea is the essential stop for anyone curious about the neighbourhood's Movida-era roots. Museo Chicote on the Gran Vía edge offers a more polished, historic cocktail-bar alternative.
Chueca: LGBTQ+ Nightlife
One of Europe's great gay neighbourhoods since the 1980s, with a concentration of bars and late-night venues found nowhere else in the city. El Junco Jazz Club offers a calmer, live-music alternative to the district's louder bars, with sets most nights followed by a late DJ set.
Huertas / Barrio de las Letras: Live Music
The old literary quarter doubles as a live-music strip, especially along Calle Huertas itself. Café Central has been Madrid's premier jazz venue since 1982 and regularly ranks among the best jazz clubs in the world — arrive early for a table near the stage.
Superclubs
Teatro Kapital, a seven-floor former theatre near Atocha, is Madrid clubbing at its most maximalist — each level running a different genre, from a chill rooftop terrace to a heaving main floor. Expect a smart-casual dress code and a night that properly gets going after 01:00.
Practical Notes
Metro closes around 01:30, later on weekends via the Búho night bus network — plan your route home before you head out, since taxis at 04:00 on a Friday can take longer to find than expected. Cover charges are common at clubs after a certain hour; arriving earlier often avoids them.
