Madrid Airport Transfers: Complete Guide

Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD)
Madrid's airport sits about 13km northeast of the city centre, with four terminals (T1–T4) connected by a free shuttle bus. T4 is the newest and largest, mostly used by Iberia and its partner airlines; T1–T3 handle most other international and budget carriers.
Metro (Cheapest)
Line 8 runs directly from Terminals 2 and 4 (T1–T3 share a station with T2) to Nuevos Ministerios in around 25 minutes, connecting onward across the whole network. A single fare plus a mandatory airport supplement applies — cheap, reliable, and running from roughly 06:00 to 01:30. The only downside is limited space for large luggage during rush hour.
Airport Express Bus (Best Value for Central Hotels)
The dedicated Airport Express bus (Line 203) runs 24 hours between the airport and central Madrid, stopping at Atocha and O'Donnell, with a night route also serving Cibeles. It costs slightly more than the Metro but is faster to the very centre and easier with luggage, since it's a coach rather than a crowded train.
Taxi (Most Convenient)
Official Madrid taxis charge a fixed flat rate between the airport and anywhere inside the M-30 ring road, which covers the entire tourist centre — ask for confirmation of the flat fare before setting off, since it removes any ambiguity about the final price. Journey time is 20–40 minutes depending on traffic. Only use the official taxi rank; ignore anyone approaching you inside the terminal offering a "special" fare.
Private Transfer
Pre-booked private transfers cost more than a taxi but guarantee a driver waiting with a name sign regardless of flight delays — worth it for a late arrival, a large group, or simply wanting one less decision to make after a long flight.
Which Option to Pick
Solo, light luggage, budget-conscious: Metro. Central hotel, want it simple: Airport Express bus. Landing late at night or travelling with a group: taxi or a pre-booked private transfer. Whichever you choose, avoid unofficial drivers soliciting inside the arrivals hall — they are not price-regulated and routinely overcharge.
