Alternative, creative, unpretentious
The birthplace of La Movida Madrileña — narrow 18th-century streets packed with vintage shops, natural wine bars, and record stores that never quite stopped being punk. Madrid's most self-consciously cool neighbourhood, and mostly earns it.

Taberna La Bola
A family-run taberna since 1870 that has built its entire reputation on one dish — cocido a la madrileña, slow-cooked for hours over coals in individual earthenware pots, served the traditional three ways in one sitting.
Bodega de la Ardosa
A tiled, wood-panelled vermouth bar open since 1892 — one of the last true bodegas in Malasaña, famous for a tortilla de patatas many locals rank above any other in the city, and vermouth poured straight from the barrel.
La Musa Malasaña
A relaxed, design-forward take on tapas — creative small plates like nacho-crusted chicken skewers and a much-loved brunch, in a neighbourhood better known for bars than serious kitchens. A reliable pick for a younger, less classic-Madrid crowd.
Museo Cerralbo
A 19th-century aristocrat's mansion frozen exactly as he left it in 1922 — a ballroom lined in gold leaf, armour, tapestries, and a small El Greco tucked among furniture he actually used. Madrid's answer to a life-sized dollhouse of the Belle Époque.
Museo de Historia de Madrid
The city's own biography in one building — a Baroque Pedro de Ribera doorway out front, and inside, a full-scale model of Madrid as it looked before the 19th-century expansion made it unrecognisable. Free, uncrowded, and genuinely useful for making sense of the rest of the city.
Madrid by Night Walking Tour
A guided evening walk through the floodlit old town — Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and the Cibeles and Alcalá landmarks lit up against the dark — ending in Malasaña or La Latina for a nightcap. Madrid's architecture genuinely changes character after dark.
Museo Chicote
Madrid's most storied cocktail bar — opened in 1931, patronised by Hemingway, Buñuel, and Ava Gardner, and still shaking drinks on the same Art Deco bar top on Gran Vía. A genuine museum piece that still functions as a working cocktail bar.
La Vía Láctea
A dive bar that's been running since the 1980s heyday of La Movida Madrileña, walls plastered with band flyers and vintage graffiti, pool table in the back, indie and rock on the speakers. As close as it gets to Malasaña's countercultural roots still functioning unchanged.
Templo de Debod
A genuine 2nd-century BC Egyptian temple, dismantled stone by stone and gifted to Spain by Egypt in 1968 for help saving Nubian monuments from the Aswan Dam floodwaters. It now sits on a hilltop above Parque del Oeste with one of the city's best sunset views over the Sierra de Guadarrama.
Gran Vía
Madrid's Broadway — a mile and a half of Beaux-Arts and Art Deco towers built between 1910 and 1929, now lined with theatres, flagship stores, and the neon of the Schweppes and Metrópolis buildings. Cut through in a straight line specifically to modernise a city of medieval alleys.
